Low platelet count is called as thrombocytopenia is medical terms. Idiopathic thrmbocytopenic purpura is the most common cause of low platelet count in children. It means that body's immune system attacks its own platelets and destroy them. Other causes include anemia, viral infection, leukemia, side effect of medication, bacterial infection, etc. You will have to consult a hematologist who can tell you the exact cause after physical examination and running some laboratory investigations.
